Elections to the Senate

The Senate is renewed every 6 years, with the exception of sector C of the students, which is renewed every 2 years.

Unfilled positions that occur in sectors A, B and D during their term of office may be called for election in the same electoral process as that for the election of sector C.

It is the highest body for participation and representation of the university community, under the terms established in the Statutes. 

It is the highest representative body of the university community. The Senate debates university policy proposals, assesses the management of the university's bodies and services and draws up recommendations, proposals and institutional declarations. It meets at least twice a year. In addition to the plenary sessions, the Senate may create specific committees.

he Senate is made up of the Rector, who presides over it, the Secretary General, the Executive Manager and 268 senate members distributed as follows::

Ex-oficio members:

  •  Deans and directors of faculties and schools

Members appointed by their sector group:

  • Two people who perform the functions of director of the university's own research institutes
  • 40 people who perform the functions of department management

 
Elected members:

  • Sector A: 83 members representing the University's permanent academic staff distributed among faculties and schools. Any change in the number of ex-oficio members of sector A will oblige the General Electoral Board to review the number of elected representatives corresponding to this sector.
  • Sector B: 15 members distributed as follows: 8 members representing the non-permanent teaching and research staff, 3 members of the non-permanent research staff and 4 members of the adjunct teaching staff.
  • Sector C: 75 members representing Bachelor's, Master's and PhD students from each centre, proportional to the number of students from each of the faculties and schools, of which at least 3 must be doctoral students.
  • Sector D: 40 members representing the technical, management, administrative and service staff, both government and non-government employees, distributed in direct proportion to the number of voters in each of the categories.

 
Causes of incompatibility to be an elected member:
The following are causes of incompatibility, in addition to those of ineligibility:
a) To be a dean or director of a faculty or school.
b) Be a department director if you already have the status of member appointed by your group.
c) Be the director of your own university research institute if you already have the status of member designated by your group.
d) Have the status of ex-oficio member, not mentioned in the above cases.

2. Electoral Regulations
The election of Senate members is regulated by Title III of the Electoral Regulations and is applicable in everything that does not contradict the Regulations for the election and distribution of members of the Senate. You can also consult the full text of the UAB Electoral Regulations.

 

Elections to the Senate have been held via the electronic voting system since 2012.
