Elections for Rectors

This information and the regulations are in the process of being updated as from the date when the new UAB Statutes come into force (14 March 2025).

The rector is elected by direct election by a weighted number of all members of the university community, in accordance with the provisions of article 51 of Organic Law 2/2023, of 22 March, on the University System.

In accordance with section 3 of the first transitory provision of this same Organic Law, ntil the adaptation of the Statutes takes place and the merits of research, teaching and university management experience that candidates for rector must meet are determined, they will be required to be in possession of at least three six-year periods of research,  three five-year teaching years and four years of university management experience in the position of a single-person officer.

Given that the new UAB Statutes were approved by the UAB Senate in June 2024, and will not enter into force until their publication in the DOGC,  the General Electoral Board at its meeting on 21 June 2024 dealt with the aforementioned additional provision with the aim of specifying which regulations should be applied. In this regard, the Board agreed:

In the event that the statutes approved in the Senate session of 19 and 20 June 2024 are NOT applicable to the electoral procedure, the General Electoral Board will apply section 3 of the first transitory provision of Organic Law 2/2023, of 22 March, on the university system and will apply the following passage:

'(...) (the candidate) will be required at least (...) four years of university management experience in a single-person position.

The interpretation of 'single-person position' is to consider that it refers to both management and management positions provided for in the 'Regulations on academic management and management positions of the UAB' Agreement of the Governing Council of 5 March 2014, modified by the agreements of 12 June 2014,  of 19 March 2015, 10 March 2016, 5 December 2018, 4 December 2019, 30 January 2020, 28 April 2021 and 1 December 2021).

Weighting of the vote by sectors

The procedure applicable to the 2024 Rector elections is that provided for in the¿¿¿¿¿¿¿ UAB Electoral Regulations, which is summarised as follows:

For the purposes of elections for Rectors, the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona constitutes a single constituency. Notwithstanding the above, and in accordance with 72.2 of the Statutes¿¿¿¿¿¿¿, the vote for candidacy validly cast by each of the sectors of the university community is weighted as follows, in accordance with the provisions of the Organic Law on Universities:

  • Sector A. Teaching staff with permanent links to the University: 51%
  • Sector B. Other academic and research staff in training: 9%
  • Sector C. Undergraduate and postgraduate students: 30%
  • Sector D. Technical, management, administrative and service staff: 10%
